The national animal of Scotland is actually a unicorn which isn’t even a real animal. The reason behind this is that unicorn is a symbol of purity and grace, can only be tamed by a virgin. The unicorn is a mythical horse like creature that has a horn protruding from the center of its head and it has been said that it possess magical abilities and the horn can render poisonous water potable and heal the sick.
Scotland actually has two national animals. While the most notable one is unicorn, the other is red lion. When James I became king of both Scotland and England following the death of Queen Elizabeth I, he combined the unicorn with the lion on the coat of arms and this was a powerful symbol as it was regarded that the lion and unicorn were mortal enemies.
Ancient Babylonians used to worship Unicorns, and they have also been historical documents describing them in text by ancient Romans, Greeks, Persians and ancient Jewish scholars have also been unearthed. They all described a creature resembling a horse endowed with a single horn on that was believed to wield magical properties and could also cure illnesses.
